What you would open on 15th is old school

By jseattle ( report abuse )
A few weeks ago, we asked What would you open on 15th Ave? It was part call to fantasize, part a reminder to take stock of the good things already in the neighborhood. You can check out the comments to see everybody's ideas -- we got more than 20 comments on the post.

First, some good news. Two of the things we want in the neighborhood, we already have:
  1. We said we wanted a mailbox/shipping service somewhere closer to home. There's a convenient solution right around the corner off 15th -- That Shop Mailing Store at 1463 E. Republican
  2. We said we wanted a fancy cheese store. While it's not quite what we had in mind, we were reminded that Rainbow Grocery usually has a nice selection of stinky cheeses. With Rainbow going through tough times, here's yet another good reason to keep the grocer around
The other items on everybody's wishlist would add some useful options to the neighborhood -- all with a big, fat twinge of nostalgia. Most-requested by far was a legit hardware store. While there may be lots of fond remembrances of the long-gone City Peoples floating around, there also seems to be a need here that Shoprite can't fill. We have repairs to make and are apparently tired of driving to pick up the right locking washers.

Other more-unexpected ideas we think could actually have a chance of surviving were a men's fashion shop like Blackbird in Ballard, a newsstand, a hobby shop so we can buy expensive (but fun!) remote control garbage and a pet store. On the pet store, we're thinking more dog and cat supply store than hermit crabs and parakeets. The pet store also represents a common issue when evaluating these ideas -- how close does something need to be to be in the neighborhood. In this case, there's a perfectly good pet supply store over on Madison. But wouldn't it be smart for somebody to open up a doggie gear shop right here in the middle of things?

We're not sure we'll see any of the above ideas come to fruition but we'll be very surprised if reader Christina's request for a bar on 19th isn't answered any day now.

There were, predictably, a lot of food and restaurant suggestions. Somebody open a deli ASAP. Actually, maybe we should categorize this up above with the wishes that have already been filled -- the Bagel Deli ain't that bad, people. Other foods requested were doner kebabs (very specific!), hot dogs, sushi (sorry, Liberty) and the brilliant reminder that an ice cream parlor would probably do pretty well. Every time the temperature rises above 70 degrees, our post on 5 Capitol Hill ice cream options gets slammed with readers searching for info. Again, Madison has a pretty good solution in Scoop Du Jour but it's a long walk.

So, Capitol Hill captains of industry, start stoking your capitalistic furnaces. It's the 20th century all over again up here. Hardware stores, ice cream parlors -- all we need is the milkman and things will almost be back in order.

As far as pet supply stores: Mud Bay Granary on Thomas at Broadway is too far away?

I must say I agree about the ice cream parlor, though -- maybe we can get The Mix to open a branch south of the ship canal?

Bagel Deli isn't the only deli option--don't forget The Cafe (Hillside Quickie) just a few doors down, between Starbucks and the jeweler's.

The sandwiches may be vegetarian, and the may take a bit longer to make, but they're SERIOUSLY tasty. I hope they stay around for a long time.

I'm telling you, a hobby shop would be totally rad!

"Remote control garbage"... you're funny. Remote control is what you call the stuff you buy at Toys R Us. Radio control is what you buy when you want to spend hundreds of dollars on seriously fast, tricked out, high-tech machines of mayhem. There's a market up here for these things!

Maarten is a genius. Yes, should have mentioned Hillside! Only one complaint -- their sandwiches are too gigantic and sometimes we require a bath after eating.

There's a hardware store on 12th and Pike(?). It went in a while ago.

There was a Baskin Robbins, a Ben and Jerrys, and a Ron and Jerrys (Ron and Jeremy's) on Broadway. All of them tanked. There was even a Dairy Queen a long time ago...

Capitol Hill has repeatedly rejected Ice Cream.

As the owner of Blackbird I'm flattered that someone thought of us.

If you've got a little money and you know of a location available, I'd love to talk.

BTW, Nicole has a nifty Blackbird blog with all sorts of fashion info and tips.

Nicole, I don't do scarves. Can you think up a new "must have" accessory soon please?

Oh, but the Bagel Deli is that bad. Come on folks - we need a real Deli not a stop and go lunch spot that is one step above a 7-24. I know the folks who work there won't take offense to this description - they microwave the bagels for god's sake. is it too much to ask for a NY style deli - real lox, bagels, a smear, pickels, homemade soup, etc. Save us from the plastic baskets and bagel "chips."

Anonymous #1, you could not be more right. I just moved to the 'hood and was HORRIFIED by the dull, cardboard-like quality of the "bagels" at BD. Very, very sad.

I still have fond childhood memories of ice-cream cones on the deck at the Cause Celebre, a hippie scoop shop in the house where Samui is now. It’s probably been gone for at least 20 years now though. As for the Bagel Deli, they used to be my fave bagels in town, but they seem to have taken a turn for the dry side in recent years. (And there was a Mix ice cream in Mad Park for a few years, but I guess it couldn't compete with Scoop du Jour.)

And when you're done thinking about 15th, don't forget E. Madison Street. One new bar (Bottleneck, http://tinyurl.com/3bfr6a ), two empty storefronts in the Safeway building, one definite and two probable major developments with multiple commercial spaces each: lots of chances for speculation. And the developers might even be listening....
