The 15th Ave Starbucks is saved (for now)

Remember your neighbor Loretta, the woman leading a campaign to keep Starbucks from closing its 15th Ave branch as part of its nationwide belt-tightening?

After reading a few reports that closures were imminent, I was waiting for the signs to go up on 15th Ave. But ran into Loretta -- inside Starbucks, of course -- and she happily reports that the 15th Ave outlet is "off the priority list."

Who knows what that ultimately means but, regardless of your feelings about the presence of the coffee giant in the neighborhood, it's good news for Loretta and the people like her who consider Starbucks their place.

15th Avenue Starbucks
Although I myself hate Starbucks (the company, not the coffee---full disclosure would tell you I'm a former very low-paid employee of theirs) I am happy that Loretta could change the mind of this big behemoth to save the shop she cares about. Even Starbucks have their loyal crowd of customers, and I'm sure she was trying to save her coffeeshop family. I'm in favor of community wherever it happens. Yay Loretta, and I'm glad all your hard work paid off!

Great news
Personally, I'm happy to have a Starbucks on 15th, regardless of my own coffee preferences. I know it's fashionable and often quite appropriate to bash the big corporations, but there are a number of reasons why I think it's misguided in this case:

1) Starbucks was on 15th Ave long before Victrola or Ladro.
2) Starbucks regularly ventures into locations where independents woudn't dare, and the results have been quite positive. Case in point - the Starbucks on 23rd & Jackson is arguably one of the coolest coffee shops in the city.
3) By turning America on to coffee, Starbucks created a billion dollar industry in which and independents and imitators have flourished.
4) If it wasn't for Starbucks, we'd still be swilling Folgers. Well, maybe not in Seattle, but certainly every else.
