SCCC parking garage to make room for science

Parking is going to get a whole lot tougher on Broadway and in the Pike/Pine corridor. First, the city is planning changes to how the parking rules work in the area. Now, Seattle Central is proposing a plan to replace the school's parking garage at Pine and Harvard with a new science building. It's not clear from the notice whether SCCC is planning to replace or only utilize the open space near the garage. Looking into it. Stand by.

Science trumps parking... again!

From the land-use notice:

Land Use Application to allow a new 1,800 sq. ft. structure (Greenhouse/ Plant Sciences Building) for existing institution (Seattle Central Community College) in an environmentally critical area. Project includes minor amendment to the major institution master plan. Determination of non-significance prepared by Seattle Central Community College.

Comments are being taken through November 12th. We side with the greenhouse on this one. We're hoping those SCCC students produce bumper crops of Capitol Hill tomatoes. All in the name of science, of course.

Land use?
What are they putting in at the location of the old church next to the Bookstore then?

Correction
I don't think that land use notice applies to the parking garage. It is only for the empty lot just to the north on Boylston. That's where the notice is displayed and anyway the parking garage is way more than 1800 square feet. I hope I am not wrong, because if I am I might need to start a Save Hot Mama's campaign!

RE: Correction
Yeah, I could be off -- the diagram on the notice shows the whole area but description says 1800 sq feet. I'll see what I can find out.

Link
Could you double check the two links? They both link to the parking rules. The second one should link to the plan. (This is of special interest to me because it's right across the street from my studio.)

We've known about the greenhouse
Our office is right across the street from the empty lot connected to the parking garage and we've been talking to the college about what they are going to do with that space. It's a pretty exciting project and it will be fun to watch as it gets developed.

empty lot on Boylston
my first apartment on capitol hill overlooked that empty space. I saw some pretty interesting activities there in spite of the iron fence they installed about 5 years ago.

I always thought it would make a good Pea-patch (there are some healthy weeds growing) but a greenhouse sounds good too!

Also in the application:
"Minor Amendment to allow less than the required parking approved in the Seattle Central Community College MIMP."

I left messages for both people listed on the application and will let you know if I hear back. My guess is that this only applies to the vacant lot and they won't need parking for the new building since it will be right next to the garage.

Non-significance
If a statement of "non-significance" is being prepared I'm almost 100% sure this will not effect the parking garage. They also have the sign out front of that little space but not the garage.

SCCC public info is looking into it
They were 'pretty sure' it's only the empty lot but are checking with the capital projects folks.
