Help a Homeless Kitty Out

It's an old story, but a very real one--a cat that ran away as its owners were moving, and has now returned to meow pitifully from the shrubbery at people walking past 15th Avenue East and Aloha. Yesterday, three neighbors congregated to see what the source of the meowing was, and what could be done. I was one, and offered to help get the news out to CHS readers.

Neighbor Toni has been leaving food and water out for the kitty, so that it won't starve, but it's clearly not safe for a house cat to be out on the street like this. If anyone would like to adopt the cat and give it a new home, Toni asks you to please contact her at three two two, twelve ninety-one.

You'd also be improving the life of a cat next door, who has food allergies but nonetheless insists on eating the food Toni leaves out and develops itchy rashes that make him miserable. And besides, who can say no to a face like that?

Food
Leaving food out attracts raccoons. I have 4 raccoons that regularly visit my front porch on Harrison because I occasionally leave food out for our cats.

I just leave out water now and they still come regularly. I think they prefer the filtered water.

due diligence
Do y'all know for sure that the original owners aren't looking for this cat? (and if they aren't, may they go to that special place in hell reserved for those who abandon pets).
Has it been taken to the vet to see if it's microchipped? I'm all for helping a poor kitty out and think it's great that folks want to help, but...I guess I'd just like to make sure that the bases are covered.

RE: due diligence
I know the landlord was alerted, so I hope the previous owners were, too. Microchip--I didn't get the impression anyone had gotten that far. That's a good thought.

RE: due diligence
2nd this. Also, has anyone tried to trap kitty and/or see if any no kill shelters have room. I can't foster, but can help with other stuff.
