Lake View Cemetery: A tour of Capitol Hill's dead people

Now, I'm not trying to belittle Bruce Lee here. He was a great actor/martial artist/man and paying homage to his resting place is no doubt a worthy cause. But sometimes I feel like he eclipses the fact that Lake View Cemetery has a whole list of historic Seattle celebrities worth visiting. And who might they be you ask?

Check out this handy google map for my list of famous Lake View gravesites. If you know of one that didn't make my list, you can also add it!

Jesus, give it a rest already. First you stage a one-man boycott of the Elysian Brewery because they won't turn over all their profits to R-71, now you want to have a fucking Halloween party in a fucking cemetery? Hey, how about a dance-off at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? I'm not sure if you're just totally declasse, a complete lunatic or a little of both.

Also in handy book form!
I picked up a copy of "The Pioneers Of Lake View" by Robert Ferguson at the Museum of History & Indsutry bookshop earlier this summer. It has a map of the cemetery and short biographies of many of the famous settlers buried here. Totally worth the $12.95.

Also the place where the opening credits to "6 Feet Under" were filmed - the graveyard parts anyway. (Gasworks for the "tree on the Hill" shot) Alan Ball said Seattle is the best place to get the creepy graveyard gray look...yea Seattle!

i think the Denise Levertov buried at the top of the hill one driveway south of Bruce and Brandon is the internationally recognized 20th century poet.

FYI: Chief Seattle himself is actually not buried in Seattle. He is buried in Suquwamish, just north of Bainbridge Island.

This is more medical than a passing comment.

Recent reports are that because of lack of sun exposure in the winter, Seattle people do suffer from lack of vitamin D .... and other benefits of sun exposure.

We need to take supplements of D in the winter.

Interesting, and we tend to stay in front of computers as well ... so when the sun is out ... here we are inside again.

All of Volunteer Park was once a cemetery
Not sure if you know this but between 1884 to 1887 the entire park was a cemetery. The bodies have since been relocated to other area cemeteries. There's an interesting story about this in History Link: http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&

By the way, the founder of http://www.HistoryLink.org, the wonderful Walt Crowley who passed away two years ago, asked to be buried at Lake View Cemetery, as near to Doc Maynard's grave as possible.

How very interesting about Volunteer Park!

I find it amusing and cliche-but-it-is-real that there are a murder of crows living in the stand of trees between Volunteer Park and the cemetery. It makes the cemetery a micro-stock photographer's dream setting, right? Kinda cool that 6 Feet Under used the setting for the show's opening credits.
