Matt, left, and Scott at the Bottleneck Lounge

Matt Durham, designer of CHS and the entire family of Neighborlogs sites, died suddenly on Tuesday. He was 30. You can read more about him in this tribute written by his brother Scott.

Matt, Scott and I worked together to build the Neighborlogs service and the businesses of our 3-person company, Instivate. I can't really think right now about how things will be without him. I can only think of my teammates -- one who I won't get to work with and laugh with again and one whose loss I can't begin to comprehend.

CHS will continue to bring you news and information about the neighborhood this week and beyond. Life moves on and we'll catch up and ride along. Same goes for you. Catch up. Move on. But give your loved ones an extra squeeze.

Here's a wrap-up of the very hot week that was. BTW, we're looking for a printing partner to trade pumping out a hundred CHS paper editions every week in exchange for adding your message to each edition. Hoping to keep it local but getting ready to open up the hunt to include an off-Hill partner. Drop us a line if you are interested.

We don't necessarily endorse the item. We just want you to know about the free CHS classifieds. Here's our CHS classified of the week:

Offical CHS HQ Thermometer

You can look at this one of two ways. On one hand, we didn't crack 100 on the Hill. On the other, it's 90 degrees inside. Stay cool.

Lots going on up here on the Hill this week: $10,000 parties, new restaurants, and, yes, new coffee shops. Have a great weekend.

Last year, I brought you this important message. This year, I am late for my own anniversary. No matter. I can't believe Ruby Chow's is now a hedge and a parking lot.

To celebrate the start of Seattle's light rail system, we've pulled together several recent articles about light rail on Capitol Hill. It's a bit of a scrapbook of recent coverage and a primer on some of the issues -- and opportunities -- Capitol Hill faces.

We also have our regular weekly CHS wrap-up for your downloading pleasure.

Seattle enters its light rail public transit era this weekend with free rides and fanfare. If you print this week's copy of the CHS print edition, leave it on the train. Enjoy the sunshine.

Turns out, when you're busy running a neighborhood news blog business, you don't make the best party planner. Could be good news for you, however. This Saturday, CHS is holding a small get-together at Vino Verite to thank the people who gave during our recent pledge drive. For 10,000 reasons, there's plenty of room for more people to come Saturday night and have a little CHS party together. So CHS is throwing the invite open to everybody. It's short notice, yes and if we had it all to do over again, probably would have been genius to plan it this way from the beginning. So it goes. Let's not look back! Looking forward, I hope to see you there. RSVP soon. Have to limit the roster to 40 of CHS's closest friends so please consider joining us Saturday, 7p at Vino Verite.

Seeing a few lost and found signs on street poles following the busy 4th of July weekend. A lost camera at Volunteer Park. A found dog near Miller Park. Please consider taking advantage of our free CHS Classifieds to post about any Lost & Found items in the neighborhood. In addition to the utility pole network and the broad stroke of Seattle Craigslist, CHS gives you another way to reach your neighbors. Hope you find what you're looking for.

The mobile culture of Capitol Hill's apartment dwellers dominates this neighborhood and defines its look, feel and spirit.

The landowners might own a chunk of real estate in one of the most desirable areas of the city but they identify with the urban nomads. We need to celebrate our apartments. At CHS, celebration means deep, deliberate, minutiae-focused study.

In that light, we introduce the new CHS Reviews apartments section. It's an opportunity for apartment dwellers and the people who love them to recruit, discourage, critique and, yes, celebrate Capitol Hill's apartments. Got an opinion on the Charbern Apartments on Belmont? Let us know. Tell us about your love for the Whitworth. Sing the song of The Granada. Don't see your favorite apartment in the list? Add it here.

Let the celebration begin.

First, thanks so much. The CHS Pledge Drive is wrapping up today and I'm happy to report that we're within sight of the $2,000 goal. We'll put the money to use supporting the writers, photographers and videographers (hi Cheesecake!) who contribute to this site. For more on that, see our pledge drive launch post.

We have our work cut out for us this grey Monday -- need to raise $438 to make the drive goal by end of day. If it doesn't happen? We're short about one month of support for a site contributor. You can give us a boost. The next 40 of you who read this just need to pony up 10 bucks or so and we're there.

Make a pledge to CHS - LAST DAY

Day 7 totals:
Pledges: 31
Dollars raised: $1,562
% of Goal: 78%

Thank You Gifts

  • $250 and above -- thank you gift: Assign a CHS story.
  • $100 and above -- thank you gift: First 10 givers get CHS gift pack
  • $25 $10 and above -- thank you gift: Choose a date for your 'sponsor of the day' message on CHS
  • Any amount -- thank you gift: Invitation to CHS thank you wine party

Why give? Here's what you'll find on CHS from the last 24 hours:

If you can't give financial support, you can still help CHS out. Send us your tips and story ideas. Add a post. Or tell your favorite local business about us and our very reasonable advertising rates. Thanks for giving!

The very good news is that we're at 60% of goal and I can stop bothering you about this on Monday. In the meantime, let's make the goal. CHS is going to put this money to use to support the people contributing to the site. So far, 22 individuals have stepped up and said they were willing to help. There's about another 14,980 who might be thinking about it. I want to invite as many of you as possible to get involved. So here's a deal.

This is what our CHS text ads look like. You can find them sprinkled on the site's right sidebar. This example happens to be for this weekend's West Seattle Community Garage Sale. Anybody who gives $10 today to support CHS will also get their sponsor message in a CHS text ad on the day of their choice in the next year. We'll set it up for you and everything. You just need to give $10. Or more :)

Day 4 totals:
Pledges: 22
Dollars raised: $1,200
% of Goal: 60%

Thanks!

You may have noticed a few small changes roll onto the site today. The biggest is the return of a quality rating feature for you to show your approval -- or disapproval -- of posts and comments. Gone are the stars that drove me a little nuts.

In their place, welcome the thumbs. The goal of either icon set is to give you the opportunity to influence the experience on this site in yet another way. For now, we'll be able to do simple things like feature the most highly-rated content. This kind of system sets us up to be able to do other, much bigger things like display highly rated content more prominently (and the inverse -- reduce the prominence of low-rated experiences.) The difference between stars and thumbs -- I'm hoping -- is helping balance the 1-star impulse. It's easy to dole out a 1-star rating -- it's the most obvious choice if you don't think something is of high enough quality. But the range of stars for positive ratings is a fuzzier choice. Hoping that the thumbs bring a more clear, binary framework...

CHS reached a kind-of-mind-blowing milestone last night -- this update on the work being started on Pine and Pike streets was our 3,000th post. Figure an average of about 175 words per post. That's about 525,000 words. Moby Dick is 212,758 words long. So, CHS, you can calculate, has produced more than two masterpieces about the lives and times of Capitol Hill, Seattle. (That's about 42 Of Mice and Men, btw.)

We hit this mark as we turn to the CHS community for a boost. Thanks to all of you who have decided to help support CHS. Here are our Day 1 totals:
Pledges: 11
Dollars raised: $375
% of Goal: 19%

To add your support, make a pledge to CHS today.

This is how I hope people will decide to support the site -- if a lot of you give a little, we can step up our effort to bring you coverage of the neighborhoods and communities of Capitol Hill. For more on why we can use your support, here's our CHS Pledge launch post. (We'll be bugging you about this through next Monday. Apologies if it gets tedious -- but wouldn't do it if it wasn't important.)

Also want to say something about not giving. The most important support you can give this site in addition to some extra dollars to help run the business is your time, attention and information. You are already giving to CHS just by reading this. You give more when you think about what you've read and add a comment or talk about it with family, friends and neighbors. Your tips and pictures, posts and comments, reviews and classified ads!, are so important to this site. We're asking for a little more this week -- thanks for what you already give.
