From the East Precinct scanner: A participant headed to tonight's 'Zombie Crawl' at Metro Clothing was detained by police after people reported seeing an Asian male in SWAT gear -- including a gas mask and what appeared to be a sidearm -- walking down Broadway. A brief pursuit ended when the male entered Metro and was taken into custody by responding officers who quickly discovered that he was wearing a costume. The crawl is a promotion for the upcoming Crypticon convention and offered free passes to the event for the best zombie costumes.

Fell behind on Seattle Police Department reports this month but digging through them today. In the meantime, Slog found this amazingly odd story from the East Precinct: Man Shot in Head Goes Back to Bed

According to a police report, on May 22nd, at about 10:30pm, the man was sleeping in his apartment in the 300 block of E Harrison Street when someone fired a bullet into his bedroom.

The report says the bullet penetrated his apartment wall and his pillow, and struck him in the head. The man apparently "felt well enough to sleep through the evening" and notified police the following day at 6:30 p.m.

Police searched the area this morning for a suspect in assaults that left two men with life threatening injuries down the Hill in Eastlake.

Around 2:30 this morning, police received a call from a condo complex in the 1800 block of Eastlake Avenue reporting that a "male was outside pounding on the exterior door, with blood coming out of his chest." Arriving officers found a man with a stab wound to his upper chest who told them an unknown male stabbed him. The SPD report says the vicitm claimed that he was stabbed for no reason.

Officers located a knife approximately 50 feet from the victim and located a blood trail that led from the victim’s location to Yale and Denny Way, two blocks away. About an hour later, officers located a second victim with a stab wound to his chest in the 1800 block of Minor Avenue.

An employee from a nearby business flagged down officers at the scene and said that he has seen a fight involving four men at Yale Avenue and Stewart Street around the time the stabbings occurred....

Heading into this weekend, we reported that James Williams pleaded guilty to the 2007 murder of Shannon Harps, noting that, at his arraignment in 2008, there had been some question regarding Williams' mental fitness to stand trial. We asked the King County Prosecutor's office what had changed for Williams since October 2008. This is spokesperson Ian Goodhew's reply:

[Williams] pled as charged after our office worked to have him restored to competency to stand trial for the murder by sending him to Western State Hospital. He pled not guilty at arraignment in 2008 because every criminal defendant will enter a not guilty plea in order to consult with their attorney, discuss the various options they have and then chose either to plead, negotiate or fight the charge by gong to trial. Mr. Williams at first did not appear competent. The court sent him to Western State Hospital for evaluation at the request of the state and defense. He was found initially not-competent and then Western State doctors restored his competency....

After an 18-month legal process, the man accused in the stabbing death of 31-year-old Capitol Hill resident Shannon Harps has pleaded guilty to first degree murder. James A. Williams, 50, is expected to be sentenced May 28th to at least 27 years in prison for the New Year's Eve 2007 slaying of Harps outside her home on Howell near 15th Ave.

In a statement, King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg wrote, "This is a good resolution to a tragic case which will result in, essentially, a life sentence for the defendant."

Williams who has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic entered a not guilty plea in October 2008 as his defense lawyer considered having her client evaluated for his fitness to stand trial. He had been held at Western State Hospital for much of the past year until this plea agreement was reached.

Police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman inside her apartment building early Sunday morning before she was able to fight him off with screams and a punch to the head.

The woman told police she was returning from her friend's nearby apartment around 2:30 AM when she was grabbed from behind, pushed inside her Bellevue Ave apartment building and shoved into a corner. She said the man pulled down her shirt and quickly assaulted her as she screamed and punched him in the head causing the man to flee.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his mid-20s with a short, stocky build. He was wearing a baseball cap of unknown color at the time of the attack.

UPDATE: 1:01 PM
A SPD spokesperson tells me that the case is not currently being investigated as a hate crime and that he was unaware of anybody having yet contacted the department to report such an incident. Should the victim or a witness come forward, the spokeperson said the SPD is ready to further investigate the incident.

--------------------

There has been a lot of concern about an increase in hate crimes in the neighborhood but it goes beyond Capitol Hill. In addition to the arrest of a West Seattle harassment suspect Tuesday, CHS has discovered this police incident report describing a beating that occurred outside a much-talked-about party last week in Fremont. We are also pursuing data related to hate crime investigations by the Seattle Police Department but our records request has been delayed a second time.

According to the SPD report, around 1:51 AM last Friday morning, an officer responded to a disturbance outside an event at the Fremont Film warehouse on N 35th. That night, the warehouse hosted...

Central District News has details on charges of felony indecent exposure brought against David Craig Martin who was arrested on Broadway last week for allegedly masturbating at a bus stop near Seattle Central:

Martin told police during his arrest last week that he had no memory of masturbating in the bus stop, saying he was "sitting there waiting for the bus, and then the police showed up." When told that a woman had seen him engaged in the act, he said he "wouldn't be surprised" since "it's happened before." In addition to the positive ID from the witness, police found the suspect equipped with Vaseline-brand hand cream and noticeably greasy hands.

CDNews reports that police have been looking for a suspect for weeks for his involvement in similiar incidents across the Hill and on Madison.

New member to the blog here but life time Capitol Hill Resident (born and raised on 15th!). We planted a dwarf Japanese black pine in our front yard on Sunday on Thomas st. between 14th & Malden. It was stolen last night  (Tuesday night) between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Just wondering if anyone has noticed suspicious activity or a new  4 foot tall beautiful pine tree in their neighborhood today?  We realize there is not much we can do and feel we will need to chain our plants to the house from now on but just wanted to post this to see if anyone may have seen anything...  Still love the hill but feel very disappointed and discouraged today.

Brief update on the Madison shots-fired story we followed over the weekend. Confirmed this morning that nobody was shot and that police believe the man with the gun shot into the air during an altercation in the parkling lot across the street from Chop Suey and the Electric Tea Company on Madison. Four people were arrested at the scene but only one was booked into jail -- the other three were interviewed and released. The arrested man was booked for illegally carrying a firearm and possession of marijuana.

Saturday night around 11:25 PM, 911 callers reported that a man had started shooting during a fight near the Electric Tea Garden. At least one caller reported that a victim had been hit while other callers reported seeing only a man firing three shots in the air.

UPDATE: 10:48 AM - SPD confirms that there were shots fired last night in the 1300 block of East Madison around 11:15 PM. SPD tells CHS that four people were detained, a gun was recovered and at least one of those people were arrested though details of the specific arrest or arrests was not available at this time. SPD was also unable to provide information about the cause or victims at this time. SPD did say that the Gang Unit is investigating this incident.

From the archive of last night's police scanner archive activity, multiple reports of shots fired came in to 911 last night around 11:30 PM. Callers said somebody started shooting during an altercation near the Electric Tea Garden. At least one caller reported that a victim had been hit while other callers reported seeing only a man firing three shots in the air. The man was only described as black and in his 20s.

The King County Jail registry system shows one man booked overnight for investigation of drive-by shooting. It is not yet clear if that booking is related to the Madison incident.

ORIGINAL POST:

Two unconfirmed reports of shots fired last night on Madison around 14th or 15th Ave. First, from an e-mail tip we received around 11:30 PM last night:

I think gun shots were fired near the taco time on Madison around 15th. 3 or 4 cracks/pops then shit load of cop cars about 5 minutes later. They are still there.

And also this from Twitter from about the same time:

@toastercookie: seattle u public safety reporting shots fired at 14th and madison

Nothing about injuries in information at hand. The 911 logs don't show any response to the area at that time but those reports only show medic and fire response, not police. There is, however, a big medic response for an assault with weapon in the logs last night at the same time in Lake City that we'll ask about.

UPDATE: 10:30 AM - Just heard back from Seattle Fire Department that they won't be able to provide information about the Lake City 911 incident until Monday morning so still waiting to hear back from SPD. In meantime, I have archives from last night's scanner activity that I'm checking out now.

UPDATE: CDNews is reporting the suspect has been arrested after being apprehended at 23rd and Jackson in the Central District in the Seattle Vocational Institute parking lot. CDN has pictures and video.

CDNews has also confirmed that SPD believes the suspect is also responsible for Saturday's heist. Ricardo Calvin Perez, was booked into King County Jail at 4:37pm today for investigation of robbery, according to CDNews.

--------------------------------------------

The bank robber who hit the Wells Fargo inside the Safeway at 15th and John on Saturday has apparently struck again at a Banner Bank at Madison and Boylston just across Broadway on First Hill.

From the CDNews Scanner report:
11:32AM - Madison St and Boylston Ave - Bank Robbery - Banner bank was robbed, Asian male, 5'5, 140, black medium length hair, khaki zip-up, blue jeans

While the physical description is nearly identical, SPD and the FBI have not yet confirmed that this the same man who walked into the Safeway at 15th and John on Saturday afternoon, handed the teller a note saying he had a weapon, and then fled with the loot after the teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. Working on confirming and getting a suspect name -- hearing that there is a warrant out for his arrest.

Mark Solomon

The East Precinct has a crime prevention coordinator watching over it again -- sort of. At last week's community meeting, Lt. John Hayes announced that Mark Solomon will be doing double duty, continuing his community work in Seattle's south but also working on outreach issues in the Central District and the rest of the East Precinct including Capitol Hill. In March, the East Precinct's longtime coordinator, Michael Yasutake, had to be let go because of a budget screw-up. At last week's meeting, precinct commander Paul McDonagh confirmed Yasutake's position had to be eliminated because the department had not properly budgeted for the prevention coordinator roles and accidentally hired two people for the same position. Yasutake had less seniority, McDonagh said, and the precinct had no choice but to eliminate the role.

Solomon already has his hands full in the South Precinct which is earning the reputation as Seattle's most dangerous. He reportedly is an occasional commenter on the Rainier Valley Post site that covers the area, however, so maybe we'll see him pop up on CHS or CDN every now and then.

The FBI's Seattle office and SPD detectives are searching for this man who they say robbed the Wells Fargo in the Safeway at 15th Ave E and John on Saturday afternoon around 4:39 PM. He is described as an Asian man, around 35 years old, 5'3" and extremely thin.

The man entered the in-store bank area near the east entrance to the 15th Ave Safeway, handed the teller a note implying he had a weapon. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the man fled the scene before officers arrived.

The location of the Wells Fargo has been reported by the Seattle PI as inside a Capitol Hill QFC but this appears to be erroneous as the address given in information from the FBI and SPD is in the 1400 block of E. John. CHS is working to confirm the location with the FBI's Seattle bureau.

UPDATE: FBI confirms that the robbery took place at the 15th Ave E Safeway.

Here is a Capitol Hill-related crime item that fell through the cracks and didn't make it into our latest police blotter update.

A 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after dropping his pants after he was caught climbing an apartment wall near Seattle University with another man around 9:30 PM on Saturday night, April 18th. Both men admitted to climbing on the wall in the 10th Ave incident. According to the report, during the investigation, Ehben Eliot of Everson, Washington, dropped his pants and shouted "Are you going to arrest me for indecent exposure?" Eliot was booked into King County Jail on one count of indecent exposure.

We got an e-mail tonight from a CHS neighbor who woke to the sound of gunshots early Monday morning:
Last night, (4/12) my roommate and I had gone to bed in our apartment at 18th and Howell and at around 1 a.m. we heard 4 shots fired that sounded like they came from very nearby.

Checking the police scanner archives from Central District News HQ, there were multiple 911 calls around 12:57 AM reporting anywhere from 3 to 6 shots fired. The callers reported hearing the shots somewhere between Thomas and Howell along 19th Ave E.

Multiple Seattle Police Department units were dispatched to the area. An officer responding to the calls reported arresting the driver of a red 2002 Chevy Trailblazer found parked on Coryell Court near Thomas for an outstanding warrant. It appears that man was booked for failure to appear. Nobody in the jail registry was booked on any gun related charges this morning around the time of the reported shots. Also, there were no medical callouts to the area in the 911 log so whatever the cause...

Commenter on Central District News witnessed a cinema-grade fistfight on Summit Ave today:

About noon, two dudes got in a fistfight while one was attempting to drive a truck away. Both men got out, proceeded to fightfight each other down Summit Ave, hung a right on Howell, came back still yelling and punching - all while leaving their truck in the middle of the road. Nearly took out a few cars in the debacle. An impressive 6-8 squads along with 3 unmarked cars swooped down in about five minutes - however, one unmarked remained in his vehicle sipping his coffee.

I'm picturing Any Which Way You Can era Clint Eastwood which means there was likely an orangutan in that truck. But I probably have it all wrong.

Witnesses state that they noticed the woman exposing her breasts when she rolled over in her sleep in the northeast corner of the park. One witness reported telling the woman that she was exposing herself at which point she rolled back over. Later, two witnesses said they noticed that the woman's shorts and underwear were around her knees. When they attempted to cover the woman with her bag, they found that she was apparently covered in fecal matter. Finally, one witness concerned for the woman's well-being, summoned the officers who arrested the suspect and had her transported to her to East Precinct where, the officer report notes, she removed her shorts while waiting in the holding cell.

DUI suspect assaults officer

On March 28 at 12:48 a.m. an eyewitness called 911 to report that a female suspect in her 30’s driving a red 2004 Ford Mustang had struck a metal barrier at Harvard Avenue and East Pine Street and drove off. At 1:20 a.m. SWAT team officers spotted the suspect vehicle and stopped it in the 1400 block of NW Leary Way. Patrol Officers responded to assist. The 37-year-old female suspect/driver displayed signs of intoxication and was placed under arrest for DUI. While transporting the suspect to the East Precinct she became violent and kicked the rear window out of the patrol car. At the precinct, as officers were escorting the suspect to a holding cell she turned and spit in the face of one of the officers.
