License plate
David, the plate was not readable even when digitally manipulated but to simplify the situation, I have posted a blocked out version. CHS does try to remove personally identifiable information like this in potentially sensitive coverage though breaking news situations don't always make it possible. In this instance, as I noted above, the plate was not readable.

The bigger question for me was promoting this article to the homepage at all. Community contributions are an important part of the site. I tend to give them the benefit of the doubt and do like some of the serendipity that pops into the site every now and then. I thought this one was cranky but fun enough.

RE: Name in police report
Thanks for the note. To clarify how we receive these reports, names are redacted by SPD, not CHS. We do try to redact when a name is missed by SPD. In this case, the report had one instance of a victim's last name un-redacted. I hope people find sharing reports in the format we receive them directly from SPD valuable. I'm not a big fan of the re-writes you see done my most traditional media outlets -- soon, I'd expect some portion of these reports to be available online from SPD. But we also aren't happy about the inconsistent redaction. Apologies for the mistake.

RE: quashed?
Squashed vs. quashed aside (let ye who speaks w/o malaprop, speak first), the locations mentioned by parks as being, um, canned are the same ones they told me about when I called about possible future park locations. So, while, yes, they originally sought those properties and then modified plans, parks does continue to bring them up as examples where landowners said 'no' and as examples of potential future park spaces that aren't available. You'll have to ask Nevins why they're continued to be positioned that way.

RE: On Second Thought
I wrote the headline and can take the heat for it. Clearly, we don't think Kris is a madman -- he has a lot to say about an interesting question so he gets quite a forum here to say it. I was having fun with the energy and passion and trying to find a way to make it clear that we know this is an alternative viewpoint without labeling this: "Commentary > Alternative: Headline here"

I apologize if that didn't come through but I really was trying to lighten this up, not bring it down. And I certainly wasn't trying to disgust anybody.

I'm also fixing the numerous typos. Only excuse for that is that so much of I my editorial energy was focused on if this piece had value and should run. I'm not a binary person for that kind of decision -- I still have some doubts -- but I believe, in the end, it's a valuable alternative view of something we might be taking for granted. I'm still excited about having Elliott Bay in the neighborhood. I still wonder if it will matter for its challenging business. The post goes enough in that direction that I thought people might enjoy the challenging ideas.

Bagels bagel bagels
The Bagel Deli should be more. The Hill has plenty of examples of small, simple places that take small, simple ingredients and turn them into something interesting even if it means heaps and heaps of marketing. The Bagel Deli sees all that and say fuggedaboutit. You can love it for that. But I'm yuppie enough to want more out of it. It's fun to get a good bagel and shmear. And the plastic basket and plastic tray thing could work. But BD feels a little lazy sometimes. Glad it's able to hang in there. But with stacks of frosting covered donuts etc. invading the Hill, not sure even the thickest coat of cream cheese is going to keep people coming into BD if they don't put some more energy into the place. But buying bagels only at Noah's and not visiting 15th Ave every now and then is sick and wrong.

But really, nobody has ever given me shit for doing the family thing at Smith. Good 'nuf food, great beer make the rest unnecessary to note. But I will! The sweet potato fries are a good snack and the various hunter/trapper entrees usually hit the mark. Basically, anything here involving braised, juicy meat is probably going to be pretty good. One weak point has been the cocktails but maybe that's just the tender looking over at my toy-strewn table and handing out half-effort.

RE: interesting
Not that I don't think there needs to be more reporting on this but Dermody was just being precise. Street robbery is somebody walking up to a person in public and taking money or property. Burglary is breaking in.

Stats show that robberies across the Hill were actually down around 11.8% (thru September). One problem with these robbery numbers is smaller totals make for easier swings in change. Statistically, robberies are pretty much the same as 2008.

We'll look more at stats when we get full year totals but one of the things I remember seeing in the trends is a rise in street robberies on certain beats as the year progressed. There has definitely been more since the last few months of 09. Don't know how the totals will stack up vs. 2008 until the data is released.

RE: Aid Delivery Halted Because Hillary Needed a New Outfit for Her Photo Op
First, don't want to set off a war of community policing but I encourage registered users to put the 'Report Abuse' link to work on off topic or otherwise inappropriate content. I'm fine with dissent discussion. But this is not the place to cut and paste somebody else's work. Community content moderation on CHS is weighted by reputation so users who have been part of the site for longer period of time, contributed more and contributed at highest quality will have more of a say in how the abuse reports manifest. The system also weighs who made the comment and several other factors when making display decisions.

Lonnie, please find a way to share your thoughts that doesn't involve pasting entire articles.

All, we'll be shipping an update with some comment improvements including truncating long comments. We're way too trusting in current state, apparently.

OK, neighbors, we know where this one is going. The santas are a lot of fun but it's pretty easy to see how they might irritate -- especially if you're living in the middle of it. While it's probably not very realistic to expect a bunch of drunk people dressed up like Santa Claus to be on their best behavior (though most were showing at least a small amount of common sense when I watched), there's no crime in raising your voice to say it wasn't 100% fun times.

We're in for this discussion more and more as residential development along Broadway and Pike/Pine increases. Let's remove 'hold the party somewhere else' and 'you should move off the Hill' from the conversation.

The family of Officer Timothy Brenton issued a statement Monday, saying that they have asked that the Brenton Family Assistance Fund be closed, and urging people who want to make donations to send them to the fund for the Lakewood officers.

"Our hearts ache for the families of Sergeant Mark Renninger, Officer Tina Griswold, Officer Ronald Owens and Officer Gregory Richards. We pray that they will be granted strength during this time of unbearable grief. Our thoughts are also with the officers of the Lakewood Police Department who continue to provide public safety services to the citizens of Lakewood. Their families are painfully aware of the risks that are inherent in their loved ones' chosen profession," the statement said. "We remain hopeful for the swift capture of the monster who robbed them of their husband, wife, father, mother, son and daughter. Our family has been comforted by the citizens of Seattle, the Pacific Northwest and beyond who have offered their prayers and support over the past weeks. For this, we are thankful."

I've contacted the people behind Night Out but have not yet heard back.
