While we are being turds and complaining about some of the neighborhood's new businesses, we might as well help a neighbor offend a few more local entrepreneurs. Sorry, young captains of industry -- we don't mean to be bad neighbors. We'll come to love you... eventually.
Tipster Jackie claims to know what business will be joining Online Coffee Company, Gaspar’s, Poco Wine Room, Swoon Boutique Spa in the Braeburn condo building at the corner of 15th and Pine -- an upscale pizza joint, Jackie says. With another pizza establishment also set to open soon, Jackie wonders if the neighborhood might be overrun with cheesy toppings: Holy crap! what will all our lactose intolerant brothers and sisters do???? Have you heard about this? I would love to see a poll on your site that asks people if not one, but two pizza joints, are the answer for us capitolhillites. Honestly, I would love to see a pho place somewhere on 15th.Doubtless, a poll is unnecessary. We can only hope for a rapid 'efficient' market process to shake out...
Our post about the new business destined for the East John Court retail space inspired Denise Benitez to share what she learned when she looked into moving her neighborhood yoga business into the new building. Here's the e-mail Denise sent us:
The reason that the "East John Court" retail spaces have sat empty for lo these many months is because they are asking way above the market rate for the spaces. I own Seattle Yoga Arts down the street (mention this blog and get a free class!), and was excited when I saw the new building going up, as we could definitely use a bigger space. When I got the prospectus for tenants from the realtor, it was all fancy schmancy and was titled "Success Now Has an Address." Gag. When I saw the prices they were charging, I thought they must be out of their minds. When I inquired whether they had any other tenants lined up, they said, yeah, "A coffee place and a dry cleaner." Like we need another coffee place. And a dry cleaner isn't exactly the first business I think of when...
Finally. We got a few ideas for things to write about from our request-a-post gadget but, well, sometimes it takes a long time to dig up details for a good story. Happy to say we're finally tackling one of requests.
A neighbor asks: what's going in at the new retail space across from group health on 15th? I hope it's Thai food. Dear neighbor, Sorry to report this -- it's not Thai food (btw, what's wrong with Jamjuree or Samui Thai?) The development of East John Court as a mixed-used space combining street-level retail with fashionable condos doesn't seem to have gone exactly to plan. First, the development had to transition from the condo plan to apartment rentals given the downturn in the housing market. Now the retail spaces seem to be lagging. We haven't spoken with the agent trying to lease the East John Court retail "opportunities" yet but none of the spaces are filled yet and only one has a tenant signed up. Before we reveal the nature of this secret pioneer tenant,...
To prove that your neighbors don't just complain about everything, the same neighbor who sent us this, also sent us this:
We noticed North Hill Bakery open Sunday and serving brunch. The brunch offerings were slim but we were psyched that they've finally extended to include Sunday open hours. That is good news. A dark bakery on a Sunday morning always made us sad. Now we expect seeing it open will always make us happy. Add it to the happy map!
Complaining about Victrola is a neighborhood tradition -- call us traditionalists. We'd like to welcome Victrola's new owner with some constructive criticism. We received the following diatribe from neighbor JH:
I go in there almost every weekend (and often more frequently) and I've noticed a couple things that piss me off more than Victrola normally ticks me off with their attitude. If the coffee wasn't so damn good...
This is exactly the kind of critical, life-altering information we hoped would come from the new Capitol Hill Community forums. From Uncle Vinny:
Hopvine Trivia UpdateBy our calculations, tomorrow is, indeed, the second Tuesday of the month.
Some of the good people running for office on the Capitol Hill Community Council will be at Smith this Wednesday night, May 14th starting at 6:30p. This is your chance to meet a few of the candidates in person and politely but forcefully emphasize your agenda on a captive audience. If nothing else, stop by because we'll both be there -- J because he's running for an office and K because she's nice like that. Look for the people wearing goofy Hello My Name Is nametags. We're also planning a daytime event later in the month so stay tuned.
The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce is organizing a clean-up of 15th Ave E. this weekend. "Graffiti removal, scraping posters off light poles, sweeping litter and window cleaning" should be right up some of your alleys. But, really, if you have some time Saturday morning, you should stop by, grab a garbage picker-upper thing (sweeping? let somebody else do that) and a safety vest and set out to clean up your favorite gutter or two. You'll meet some neighbors, a few local business owners and you can show the kids that their neighborhood belongs to the people that live there.
Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce Announces 15th Ave Street Sweep, Volunteers Needed WHEN: Saturday, May 10, 2008 • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM WHERE: Group Health Courtyard, 15th & John START 10:00 AM: Live music, welcome by special guests, free t-shirt, coffee from Starbucks, pastries SWEEP: 15th Avenue between Denny and Roy, all cleaning supplies will be provided FINISH 12:00 PM: Reconvene for pizza and surprise entertainment
We are asked time to time, "CHS, where might I meet a lady friend on Capitol Hill?" Being far removed from the match game, we usually don't have a very good answer. But after our trip the other night to pick up takeout from Jamjuree, we have a suggestion for you singles on the prowl. As we waited for our order, we watched a stream of young single types come in to pick up their meals for one. Our suggestion: Stake out a spot at the counter and wait for somebody to come along who orders the same number of spicy stars as you do. Then combine orders.
We're happy to see the next Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce street sweep is going to be in our area of the Hill. It's two weekends off now but mark your Capitol Hill calendar -- the sweeps depend on people like you and me to come out, grab a garbage picker-upper and a trash bag and get to work. Poster people, come help tear down your vintage 2006 work. Taggers and sticker freaks, this is your chance to make good with society and clear some new room to work.
The Chamber's posters for the event can be seen up and down 15th -- they're pretty groovy (we couldn't find an online version to share here, however) -- so it looks like the street's business community is getting behind the effort. There will also be some music and food action to inspire you. Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce Announces 15th Ave Street Sweep.
Volunteers Needed. Details HERE WHEN: Saturday, May 10, 2008 • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
We've noticed a few more panhandlers back on 15th lately. Like the tulips, seems to come with spring. Looks like somebody is bringing the power of the pole to the situation. Worked for today, anyway -- the usually well-manned 'handle spot below this sign in front of Walgreens wasn't staffed.
Frankly not sure the sign is necessary. We don't mind being asked for change in a mostly polite, non-aggressive way. But, then again, if the skate rats from Broadway and irritating hipster panhandling hobbyists from downtown start hopping on the 10, we might start putting up some signs of our own. UPDATE: Question in the comments about the fine print. Here you go: ![]()
Sonic Boom Records Capitol Hill is celebrating Saturday the 19th's National Record Day with a slate of in-store performances and DJ action.
Please join us for the first annual national record store day. In addition, 10% of all sales on Saturday will go to Music4life, helping music programs is Seattle City Schools! http://www.rotarymusic4life.org/We don't buy a lot of music offline these days but we do like us a good bargain bin flipping through experience every now and then and we owe most of our grown-up music likes/dislikes to record store listening station experiences. Plus, in-...
Packed to the rafters Sunday happy hour not withstanding, we're a bit worried about Smith. New on its menu, ham and cheese donuts. The question: Where can Smith go from there? Everything now is epilogue.
We don't typically find ourselves in alignment with the Seattle Weekly these days -- though every now and then they get it right. One area of coverage where they can still hold our attention is food. They do a good job with eats and, for the most part, their reviews are on-mark.
This week, SW brings news that 15th Ave's Hillside Quickie is now offering a dinner menu and answers the all-important question: Would I eat it again? Yes, I could enjoy more of these burgers on occasion, though the prices on the dinner menu (topping out at $18.50) were a little higher than expected. And my dining companion, playing devil's advocate, would have to mention that just across the street, 22 doors offers an $11 grass-fed hamburger.SW also notes that Hillside is running a $15 dinner promo on Thursdays until the end of the month.
We were queuing up a brilliant post about people from neighborhood businesses who blog -- mpfaff from Victrola, for example -- when we went over to check red isnt dead to see what the Red Balloon insider is writing about these days. Turns out, neighbor Red is leaving the neighborhood:
I am moving to San Francisco!Bye, Red -- thanks for speaking up and sharing your side of things. Make sure to pack a sweater for your SF summer.
This must really piss off the masking tape bandit -- Liberty's happy hour power pole posters are back for spring. This time, they're posted about 12 feet off the ground.
Dreary Seattle spring is a good time to have somebody cook for you. Lucky for CHS neighbors, 15th Ave's Palermo -- capitolhill.palermorestaurant.com -- will hook you up with chow without even having to talk to somebody.
Living in the future, you'd think we wouldn't get too excited about shopping on the Internet for our food. But apparently setting up a decent online presence for an independent restaurants isn't easy. Check out the site of 15th Ave Indian food purveyor Chutney's Grille on the Hill(e), for example. It's a mess and doesn't really work as anything but an online menu. Meanwhile, back at Palermo's site, you can check off a few options, enter your credit card info and have a pizza heading your way in 30 minutes. All this without talking to distracted, mildly irritated staff.
Fuel + Red Balloon Company = coffee celebration!
Today's big orange balloons decorating Fuel in celebration of their 3rd anniversary on 19th Ave have us thinking about other neighborhood collaborations we'd like to see:
Or does it? Seattlest's MvB reports that Alterations Plus (the one near the bakery) is calling it quits and trying to sell the business. In an early-round CHS Tourney battle two years ago, A-Super Clean took out Alterations Plus, foreshadowing the current situation. Unless an inspired dry cleaning entrepreneur steps forward, A-Super Clean (the one near Victrola) will have 15th Ave E. to itself. We were Alterations Plus people ourselves because, well, we liked the folks who ran the place. We wish them good luck and thank them for taking care of our stuff.
It's not our job to explain everything. We're only here to report. We report. You explain. 15th Ave - Capitol Hill - Seattle.
Self description: "the blog of the seamy underbelly of Seattle's seamy underbelly - Capitol Hill's 15th Avenue. Dripping with sex, money, drama and liquor, life on the Street is enough to make even the hippest hipsters jealous." Recent post seems proof the 15th Ave drama might be a little faded. You can help. The site is all-access -- anybody can post with the username and password in the sidebar. Log in. Add to the legend.
Despite nearby alternatives, people continue to line up and wait forever for weekend brunch at Coastal Kitchen. So we're happy to find this account of the new brunch menu at 22 Doors -- and a 15-minute wait for a table.
Here are the results of the Violin Dude Compensation Study we kicked off before abandoning you for a week. Our research shows that the Violin Dude's total take for the study period was 17 cents per respondent. Also, the giving was clustered -- just 14% of CHS neighbors surveyed report dropping money in his case in the previous month. Turns out, neighborhood violin playing is nearly as profitable as neighborhood blogging.
First a photo post and now a link round-up. We admit it. We're easing back into this whole neighborhood blog thing. Here's the stuff rattling around our inbox.
Capitol Hill has at least eighteen different Thai restaurants. I've tried most of them. Jai Thai was my first Hill Thai, but I like my food spicy and they tend forget a few stars every time I visit. Rom Mai Thai was ok, but the staff was a little too touchy with my companion. Samui Thai was tasty too, but they found a place on my banned list after some acutely poor service.
Then I found Jamjuree. I love Jamjuree. I'm not a food critic, so I can't think of 10 polysyllabic adjectives to describe their food, but I always leave full and happy. The lunch special comes with a perfectly tiny soup and salad, followed by 3 pounds of pad thai and curry. I'm a vegetarian and even though I know that Thai food is plum full of fishy fish sauce, my rule is that I'll eat it if the menu doesn't explicitly list fish sauce as an ingredient and I can't smell it. (I need to get my Omega-3s some way, right?) Jamjuree excels at hiding fish sauce, if it's even there. The food is consistently spicy, not too sweet, and just... |
