Capitol Hill, this might be our happiest holiday travel season... ever. By way of fellow community news site B-Town Blog covering lovely Burien, CHS has learned that we'll all get a great present from Uncle Google this year -- free wireless Internet at Sea-Tac:

When you’re traveling this holiday season, you can enjoy free WiFi at 47 participating airports and on every Virgin America flight. Just bring a WiFi-enabled laptop or mobile device and stay connected to family and friends for free while you travel now through January 15, 2010.

We also talked to Bruce Gray of Sound Transit about the start of light rail airport service which is scheduled to happen 'late in 2009' according to the airport link project page. Gray says the announcement on the start of service will come later this week and said the trains will be continuing through to the Sea-Tac stop "in time for the holidays." "Which holidays?" CHS asked. Just wanted to be sure. Gray said we'll find out this week.

Pie! (Photos by Lucas Anderson/Neighborlogs.com)

Here's as-it-happened coverage of the Cal Anderson Independence Day picnic pie eating contest. A few hundred have trickled through the park's festivities on one of the sunniest Seattle 4th of July in memory.

This is the first time in a very long time that I'll be on Capitol Hill for Independence Day. I'll be at the Capitol Hill picnic at Cal Anderson park on Saturday. If you're staying in town, hope to see you there. I'll have a jar of CHS crow buttons and will Tweet our picnic blanket location -- stop by, say hello and put down a blanket nearby if you like.

Meanwhile, this sunny Friday holiday kind of snuck up on us. What are you doing with it? And where will you be on Saturday?

Expect a few more bodies this year as the Lake Union fireworks will be the only show in town. Don't want to overload any one place so make sure to spread out and let the short people up front. And bring your singing voice.

  • I-5 shores is usually hopping!! -- sparklingallison
  • You can also watch the fireworks displays going on the eastside from Capitol Hill on 22nd ave around Galer. There are usually at least 3 different displays to see. -- Mike
  • we usually head to the eastlake over-pass (which will be closed to traffic) to watch the lake union fireworks from there. best non-roof-top viewing i know of... -- mmess
  • Just north of the Belmont-Eastlake I-5 overpass -- Andrew Taylor (Secret firework spot)

Message is the same for all locations. Don't even try to drive. You'll never find a place to park.

After the amazing debut of Saturday's Capitol Hill Pride Festival:

C. Hill has a new pride event, a Sat. street event, all good, no competition for the vast Sunday parade and Center happening, just a pleasant couple of hours and not requited to spend a fortune.

A noisy but intriguing takeover of the People's Parking lot:

while i think the idea of a dance party (or anything really) in that lot is pretty cool, the execution really sucked. blasting music at midnight in violation of noise ordinances only goes to show how selfish and self-centered some people on the hill can be. why not have the dance party earlier like at 9pm? you know, when most people probably AREN'T sleeping.

And a general sense of good times all over the Hill as people claimed the streets as their own for a weekend, some people are asking for more:

How about this Saturday?

The 7th annual Capitol Hill Independence Day is waiting for your to build on it. Not that it needs too much help. Already planned:

  • Free music
  • All-park parade
  • Patriotic tie-dye
  • Root beer floats from Molly Moon's, eats from Via Tribulani
  • Free cotton candy
  • Urban family portraits

The planned portion of the event runs noon to 5p.

But CHS has also heard about an interesting opportunity in the park later that night. Reportedly, the parks department will be leaving the lights on at Cal Anderson Park's Bobby Morris play field ALL NIGHT LONG. Ostensibly, this energy expenditure is designed to deter idiots from burning holes in the artificial field turn. But it seems like an opportunity begging to be embraced and extended. Remembering the lessons of the 'guerrilla dance party,' creative and respectfully-quiet young patriots might be able to put the Cal Anderson midnight sun to work. Happy Independence Night.

Do you want your 4th of July to be about a record 60,000 people crushed into Gas Works park or an increased police presence to handle larger than normal crowds in Eastlake trying to see the city's only fireworks display this year?

Or would you rather your 4th of July be about Capitol Hill community, a picnic in the park in the heart of the city, live music, good food and goofy games? CHS will take the latter please.

Below are the details for Capitol Hill's 4th of July celebration in Cal Anderson park. If you want to catch the Gas Works fireworks over Lake Union (remember, no Elliott Bay fireworks this year), this CHS comment thread has some good Hill viewpoints.

The Cal Anderson Park Alliance announces the 7th Annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic: a day of music, food and fun to celebrate our country and community. This free event is open to the public and will be held at Cal Anderson Park on Capitol Hill, Saturday, July 4th from 12 to 5 pm.

Bands hitting the stage all day will include kids-jammers...

Stew from Olivar. Savory tarts from Poppy. Treats from B&O Espresso. Cherry pie from High 5 Pies and Fuel Coffee. No, not my lunch menu. The Capitol Hill Community Council is holding its (rescheduled!) public holiday party Thursday, 7p at the Cal Anderson park shelter house (just north of Bobby Morris playfield). It's free. It's community. It's potluck if you wanna bring a side to add.

Haven't had a CHS meet-up in awhile. Consider coming out and saying hi. I'll have crow pins, too, if you don't have yours yet.

You'll definitely be able to score your fix on New Year's Day. You earlybirds just need to hover while the baristas sleep in a tad. Somebody tell Vita to answer their damn phone already. People wanna know. (Update: Seattlest's MvB hooked us up with the Vita intel)

As for everything else, you'll have to just head out on a personal voyage of discovery and find out for yourself. Good way to start a new year, that.

Dear Santa,

We have been a very good neighborhood this year. We mostly didn't do too many bad things though there was a little bit of graffiti here and there. We cleaned our plates and finished our lattes and helped keep the drains mostly clear. We didn't do a great job keeping the sidewalks free of ice -- but it's not because we didn't want to (please see requested gift #2). For the most part, we spent the year celebrating in the streets and being very, very good to each other.

Here is what Capitol Hill would like for Christmas this year. Please also read the comments for more.

Love,
CHS

  1. Conservative noise variances to keep light rail construction quiet during the wee hours of the night.
  2. Snow shovels that we will store away for a decade.
  3. Money for the parks at Summit and John and the one up on 16th Ave. Sorry, city says you can't just give us the benches.
  4. A new lease for buddies at Neighbours.
  5. New homes for Crave and Monsoon.
  6. Magic anti-economic-downturn beans for the Hill's small, indie businesses....

When I talk about CHS (when am I not talking about CHS?), the word 'experiment' comes up a lot. It is both an accurate description and an overstatement. A lot of stuff we do here is new journalism or new media or new community. But most of it is only the natural course of what is interesting, what is fun and what is necessary to tell the story.

So, here's an, um, experiment to ponder. I will be out of town next week. Except for a few planned stretches of time, I will be online and updating the site from afar. That's part one of the experiment. Part two of the experiment is what will determine the longterm success of CHS -- the community of CHS neighbors is running the site.

It happens all the time already -- I logged on last night to find three posts suddenly appear on the front page of what I used to consider 'my site.' Anybody can post to capitolhillseattle.com and I've given a wide range of experienced contributors the ability to feature the best posts on the CHS homepage. I'm just part of the team now....

Here's the deal. Even if it never snows, this city is going to be frozen mess on Thursday. Holiday parties aren't happening the way they used to. And we didn't plan a CHS-related get-together this month. All of these provide excellent reasons to stop by Thursday night's community holiday party hosted by the Capitol Hill Community Council.

Need more to compel you than getting to celebrate with the community, meet me and, if you're sweet, score a crow pin? How do you like these apples?

  1. Delicious stew from Olivar
  2. Surprise appetizers from Poppy
  3. Holy shit awesome pies from Fuel Coffee and High 5 Pie
  4. A generous door prize from Barrio
  5. A great support cast of snacks and beverages from QFC.
  6. And, oh yeah, it's FREE and everybody is invited

If you are the creative type, please also consider bringing a small side or snack to share. The council is looking at this as a chance to get together with the people of the Hill and have a good time in addition to celebrating the council's re-birth. There will be...

Low enough to see...

Notice the wreaths and garlands along Broadway and Pike/Pine? That's because the Hill's chamber of commerce (who footed the bill for the holiday greenery and lights) convinced workers to go back out and lower the decorations within eye level. Apparently the Hill's main corridors had so many banners, etc. flying that workers decided to add the the holiday installations where there was space requiring passersby to look nearly straight up to see. No longer. Now the urban grit has a little seasonal decor low enough to see but, of course, high enough to keep you crazy kids from grabbing some decorations for home. Merry Xmas.

Your friends and neighbors are budgeting. Corporate Xmas parties are getting the axe. Your holiday joy this year, it seems, falls to the community to provide. Next week, the Capitol Hill Community Council is throwing a public holiday party. And, yeah, everyone's invited.

Plan is for the council to forgo its regular public monthly meeting on the third Thursday of the month, and, instead, enjoy some food and drink and community. There will be snacks and beverages provided -- thanks local merchants! -- but potluck is also encouraged so bring a snack or side to share.

If you haven't been to a council meeting before, this is a good time to get involved. Part of the night's mission is some very modest fundraising -- suggested $5 donation. But really, it's about getting everybody together for a little holiday time. Would be great to see you there.

CHS is an experiment in collaboration. When you leave a comment here, you are working with the group to expand the conversation. Users post stories, pictures and videos. More and more, we're finding ways to work together in significant ways -- I'm looking forward to seeing what Cheesecake and EmilyP cook up with his next video episode and her design skills.

In that spirit, we'd like to try another new thing -- CHS Giving Snowball 2008, an experiment in holiday giving. At the center of any community collaboration, there needs to be a driver. For Snowball 2008, it's neighbor pffft who wrote in looking for a way to expand his plans for holiday giving. Pffft will help get the Snowball rolling by throwing $100 in the group pot (see below) and pledging $400 to Northwest Harvest if we meet our $700 giving goal. Thanks pffft! CHS is also throwing $50 in the community pot to get things rolling. And there is no time like the present to get things rolling -- I'm hearing all sorts of anecdotes about challenges faced by...

This one definitely belongs on the CHS Holiday Awesomeness 2008 map -- need to pin down an approximate location and add it.

"Personally affronted" by the recent theft of a sign adding, um, counterbalance to a Nativity Scene at the state capitol, neighbor Arboreality created this unique holiday decoration of her own:

She plans, she says, to fly the banner proudly from her balcony. Want one? She also set up an online shop to procure your own 'Sol in Solstice' gear.

A few images from tonight's special holiday edition of the 2Tue art walk. Lots of snacks and free flowing wine. Scored a nice little painting of a seahorse which apparently is going to be the hip animal of 2009 bumping deer back to pasture. Enjoyed a singer songwriter type performing inside Retail Therapy. Heckled the carolers inside Barrio. It felt like a different Capitol Hill. Some will turn their nose up. But there were enough reminders of the Hill's good stuff in the night that only a hardened cynic would have passed on taking a turn on Santa's lap.

When I was a younger man, I, too, would have been less than enthusiastic about the provincial message that is shop local. But I am old. And I now have my own business (you're reading it). And I know that you only get so long to spin around this planet. And make things. And get things. And I sure don't want to end my spinning knowing that I didn't get things in a way that helped my friends and neighbors.

Take The Economist and wipe your bum with it. Go shopping local this weekend.

Here's the list of Hill merchants, restaurants and watering holes taking part in the City Stimulus promo this weekend. Happy spinning. And, oh, btw, if you have a Hill biz and want to get in the mix, leave a comment here to let people know.
