You've already seen some of the Hill-oween pictures we gathered and took during the fun last Saturday -- but there are so many new shots flying around the Internet in the days since that it would be a shame not to share those too. Thanks for dropping these treats into our CHS flickr pool plastic pumpkin. Special thanks to flickrite sea turtle who, once again, captured so many great images from Halloween on Broadway. You'll see a lot of sea turtle's work in this slideshow of images from "capitol hill seattle" sorted by flickr's "most interesting" ranking from this year. Enjoy.
You are never to old to trick or treat!, originally uploaded by ERIK98122.

Halloween on Broadway, originally uploaded by sea turtle. Here are images and video from the Capitol Hill trick or treating scene near St. Joe's. We'll continue adding to this post as more pictures come in from the big night including scenes from Broadway and beyond.

UPDATE 8:13 PM: We'll have some more pictures from the night from CHS contributors plus the good stuff we find on Twitter, etc. We're also keeping one ear on the scanner. Thus far, the most interesting thing we've heard about was a flaming, homemade hot air balloon soaring westbound about 150 feet in the air in the vicinity of the huge crowds trick or treating around 15th Ave E and Aloha. The 3-foot-tall balloon was aflame and drifting around 7 PM. In less flammable news, we liked this politically-tinged costume idea found via Twitter. UPDATE 4:20 PM:

If you haven't yet figured out what to be for Halloween, maybe these photos from Thursday night's community party in Miller Park will inspire. Looking for something tried and true and surely awesome? Check out the CHS Costume History thread in the comments on this post. How many of your past brilliant costume ideas can you remember?
Update: Tom Carr's worst nightmare, originally uploaded by Michael Holden. Scenes from autumnal Capitol Hill courtesy of the shutterbugs in the CHS flickr pool.

, originally uploaded by the distant atlantic. It was an action packed weekend on Capitol Hill. CHS posted its coverage of the largest event Saturday as it happened -- CHS Seattle AIDS Walk 2009 coverage. For the rest, we're turning coverage over to you. Here are the pictures, videos and observations from the crowd of this weekend on Capitol Hill. The Decibel Fest's annual outdoor appearance in Volunteer Park is always good for amazing images, not to mention the dancing fun in the sunshine.
concert in the park Originally uploaded by zenobia_joy Meanwhile, The Sunbreak shares this trippy little video sequence of a hawk soaring on the winds above Volunteer Park as Decibel boom boom booms below. More pictures from the crowd: And a video that will only make you a little dizzy: Saturday's AIDS Walk also filled Volunteer Park with people. Organizers estimate around 2,500 marched this year to raise money in the fight against HIV and AIDS organized by Lifelong AIDS Alliance. Here is a video from the morning and a slideshow of images from... The seasons on Capitol Hill, this year at least, know no calendar.
Victrola Coffee is providing a live stream of images from tonight's pre-qualifying Barista Jam Latte Art Smackdown that CHS wrote about earlier this week. Without commentary from the judges, it amounts to little more than latte porn. But it's kinda getting me all perked up and ready for my day just looking at it. Here's a slideshow of pours marked 'winner' in the stream (which I assume means that particular cup won in its round of foam vs. foam battling). I've sorted the images by 'interestingness' for your enjoyment. I'll have to check in with Victrola to find out who was declared the victor.
Taken last night but the image will surely help you cool down before you fall asleep tonight after surviving the hottest day in Seattle history. Sweet dreams.
Here is a look at what Capitol Hill looked like on a day where the thermometer hit an 'unofficial' high of 105.5 °F. Got a hot pic? Post a comment. You've had a look at how we saw the weekend's fun. Here are some shots we found from the crowd. Thanks for sharing, neighbors. Let's get started with a picture of the parade through Cal Anderson Park by Zeebleoop. Meanwhile, up on 15th Ave, Hillside Quickie's annual vegan bbq was underway. Here's a shot of the chow from the Its My Darlin - Seattle Street Style blog:
Unfortunately, noting to be found online (yet) about the secretive Hopvine Tennis Tournament. Holler if you have something you'd like to share. More Independence Day scenes from Cal Anderson and the Hill: Thanks to bade_md, adventureschool, Its My Darlin, flyingcoffin, jeanineanderson and zeebleoop for sharing your images.
The Capitol Hill Pride Festival is happening as you read this. Turn lanes are a walkway, restaurants have moved their tables onto the streets and the music and more is just getting started. It all makes way for the Dyke March later tonight. Meanwhile, Cal Anderson Park's morning of Equalityoga attracted around 300 practitioners to the turf-covered sanctuary of Bobby Morris play field. Neighbor TruckerSeattle submits the following photo and asks:
Our answer is art, Pride, or Pride art. Yours? Some media outlets have wire services to browse for news. CHS has Twitter. Here are two community-sourced updates on recent CHS stories that came in on our, uh, Twitter wire today:
This happy cacophonous moment comes courtesy of the CHS flickr pool and neighborhood capturer of life's moments, sportsracer-5. The Stranger editorial director and Seattle's greatest living Gonzo journalist Dan Savage is, um, mounting an effort to draw attention to the Washington State Liquor Control Board's bear hunt against Capitol Hill gay bar hall of famer the Eagle. Savage on his Dicks in Bars project:
CHS Capitol... Photographer Joseph Songco has been documenting the before and after of Sound Transit's light rail demolition across Seattle. Below are his shots of Capitol Hill's new voids. Hoping his project continues and captures the after-after construction phases.
Also, don't forget the Olive Way exit from I-5 northbound shuts down Sunday night and stays closed for the next year to prepare the area for light rail tunneling. While everybody else thought "Ice cream," Musely thought, "Donut!" Surely this has been done before. No? Nobody? Musely is a genius (ERIK98122, you're pretty swell yourself). Thanks for sharing in the CHS flickr pool.
Here are some visual follow-ups to a couple recent CHS posts from 3D photo specialist vrseattle.com First, we captured the beauty of 21st Ave's spring blossoms in this post -- but vrseattle does us one better with these 3D views of the pink canopy.
One can only hope that recent coverage will inspire more VRs. Rancho Bravo? Molly Moon's? 3D hippies? Thanks to mrzarquon for sharing this booze, Mexican Coke, lime and Ranco Bravo taco burrito fueled photo map of a tour through Capitol Hill's Cal Anderson Park and Broadway on the most beautiful day we've seen since October. Even got a shot of the dude in a gnome hat sitting in a tree in the park. Bongos not pictured. Happy sunshine. Seattle Municipal Archives visited the CHS flickr pool and shared the cool shot below of 1111 E. Pike in 1944. History repeats. Back in '44, the sidewalk in front of Harry's Tavern was ripped up. The sidewalk and lots more have been ripped up at the same address as the soon-to-be completed Elleven Elleven East Pike condo project takes shape (hat tip to flickr user ascheele100 for the link). Along with this cool old shot of Harry's, we've included a Google StreetView map for a look at the recent construction phase for the location and, while we wait for the Google Map to transform someday to a shot of the new condos, an artist's rendition of the project's design.
Got a few comments offline that my previous selection of spring imagery from the CHS flickr pool was, well, dark and kind of creepy. Let's fix that. Thanks to zeebleoop, Erik98122 and ctanstfl for their contributions. Sorry. Couldn't resist one more dark and creepy shot of spring. Bucket of donuts! Even the most cynical blogger cannot resist after our chilled winter. There is more light. There are more flowers. There are more spring creatures -- including the well-dressed polar bear. Happy pre-spring on Capitol Hill. Thanks to all the shutterbug neighbors for being part of the CHS flickr pool.
This weekend addition to the CHS Flickr pool certainly sums it up. Thanks for sharing sweetwankle. Thought I'd start the day with a little romance. A down-in-the-dumper kind of year so far with tanking economy and frigid temps -- don't think I've ever heard more friends say they can't wait for winter to be over. Easy to let Valentine's Day slip by. Here's a little non-corporate expression of love to get you going. We've neglected the CHS flickr pool for too long -- it's turned moody and a little dark, full of unrecognized art. Recognize it! |
